There is a legend of an evil fresh-water mermaid living in the land of the lakes in North-West England. The legend says that she appeared to men before enticing them in to watery graves. 

( We should never under-estimate the powers of a human imagination. It can be a very fertile and extraordinary thing. People are capable of believing in almost anything, if they try hard enough.  )
