Sketchbook Drawings

Here are some drawings from my sketch books; a few ideas and a dry-point etching, all on the same theme.

Having taken a interest in life-drawing from my art school days back in the 70's, I tend to regard drawing itself as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself. Thus, few of these ideas, will ever make it on to something as permanent as canvas.

That subtlety of tonal change with imperceptible graduations have made the female figure the great challenge to artists down all the ages. Apart from the obvious; sometimes profound; effect that a woman may have on any man, ( the word 'woman' is a loaded word ) her lines, forms and colours, are so complex that they test any artist's skills to the very limits. Their beauty can seem breathtaking, defying reproduction by any means, and therein lays the challenge.
